Hello Everyone – So another year is upon us and it is hard to believe but this will be the 5th year we have been hosting the Watabeag Laker – Lets hope the weather will be cooperative this year. Please visit the following link to a story on our derby from last year that was Published in Northern Ontario Travel – www.northernontario.travel/northeastern-ontario/watabeag-ice-fishing-derby
News – MNR participation – Like last year the MNR will be joining us for the Watabeag Laker. Last season we looked to get participant information to assist the MNR in lake studies. This year we are doing so again and below is the information on how you can help – Remember the health of Watabeag Lake is in the interest of all of us – the more we can help the MNR with information the better our knowledge and health of Watabeag Lake will be.
The local Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office is interested in collecting information about Lake Trout in Watabeag Lake. They will be providing sheets to fill out during the day to help describe the fish you captured. These sheets capture information like the weight and length of the fish, as well as if other fish species were captured. The MNRF are also requesting that the heads of fish killed be submitted, as these can be used to age the fish. All of this information can help form a picture of fish health and productivity in the lake. Participation in the surveys is optional. If you would like to participate, forms and freezer bags can be picked up at the weigh stations throughout the day, or you can print your own copy of the form. If you have questions about this survey you can contact Lauren McDonald, Management Biologist, at 705-568-3241, or through email at lauren.mcdonald@ontario.ca.
